What if you could do what you love, and make money on it at the same time? What if you didn’t have to work at a job you hate just to fund your passion?
While no one can promise that you can sit by the pool and make millions in cash tomorrow, it’s possible for most people to profit from their passion. Even today, your passion could be key to you seeing a change of direction in your happiness, finances, and more time with your loved ones.
Recently I was chatting with a friend on Twitter, Michael. He’s a great drummer, enjoys playing for his church worship team, and works daily in the water management field. Not too long ago he started a website and began posting videos of his passion – videos of himself playing drums. To my surprise and his, he has recently reached 1800+ followers on Twitter! Thats a great amount for anyone that simply uses their tweets for personal use (for comparison, in a much larger city, I only have 280 followers on Twitter).
While having that many followers may only seem like a nice number, it’s also a great opportunity. Social media connections bring marketing power – they can be extremely helpful for businesses to generate interest in what they are doing. Followers and friends are an audience – an audience that is interested and listening to you. Billions of dollars are spent every year in this very thing – gaining an audience. Audiences are the base of marketing.
How does that translate into a profit? Michael’s passion is drumming, and it’s highly likely that most of his new followers are following him based on mutual interests – music, church worship, and drumming specifically. On his website he offers drumming lessons – a way in which he can earn some financial reward for doing what he loves. While it’s listed on his website, there is a good chance that much of his audience does not know that he offers drumming lessons. They may have children, friends, or other connections that are looking for someone to teach them how to be a drummer. They need what he offers and may be willing to pay for it.
The way to profit from your passion is to connect your audience to the part of your niche that earns you income while bringing them something valuable. If you are looking to profit from your passion, answer these 3 questions:
What part of your passion is profitable?
It may be a product you make, a service you sell, or even an opportunity for you to share something that other people need. For Michael, this is teaching others his expertise on his skill.
Do you have an audience?
They may be friends, co-workers, or total strangers – but they share a mutual interest with you and are interested in what you’re saying or doing. Gain an audience by connecting with old friends, networking, or going to social events. Don’t be afraid to connect based on one-time meetings – you never know what may develop.
What do I need to connect the two together?
Social media is a great way to let people know what you do and how it can help them. Chart your expertise and the exploration of your passion through social media, discussion and publishing content (blogs, videos, podcasts). Get a free blog at WordPress.com, post videos on Youtube, and use your audience to generate interest in the part of your passion that is profitable.
You can turn your passion into a profit. Use online marketing tools to gain an audience and being your journey to doing what you love.
